Felipe es la forma iberica de Filipo, del griego antiguo Philippos β compuesto de philos (amor) e hippos (caballo), que significa "amante de los caballos". Lo llevaron Filipo II de Macedonia, padre de Alejandro Magno, y cinco reyes espanoles, entre ellos Felipe II, impulsor del Imperio espanol en el siglo XVI, y el actual Felipe VI. En Brasil fue el septimo nombre mas popular en los anos 2000 (261.272 registros) y undecimo en los 2010 (225.444). Sus variantes β Filipe, Philip, Philippe β reflejan su enorme alcance en la civilizacion occidental.
