Jamsheed es una variante de Jamshid, uno de los nombres mas celebres de la mitologia y literatura persa. Deriva del avestico Yima Xshaeta, que significa "rey radiante". En el texto sagrado zoroastrico el Avesta, Yima era un rey primordial que reino durante una edad dorada de la humanidad. La epopeya persa Shahnameh de Ferdowsi inmortalizo a Jamshid como soberano de sabiduria legendaria, al que se atribuye haber ensenado a los humanos los oficios, la medicina y el arte de elaborar vino. El nombre se usa en Iran, Afganistan, Tayikistan y Pakistan.
