Kalla es una variante de Calla, del griego antiguo "kallos" (κάλλος) que significa belleza — la raíz de caligrafía, Callista y Callie. Está más directamente asociada con el lirio cala (Zantedeschia), una de las flores más elegantemente simbólicas de la cultura occidental: pintada obsesivamente por Diego Rivera como ícono mexicano, fotografiada por Edward Weston e Imogen Cunningham, y presente tanto en bodas como en funerales por sus asociaciones con la pureza y la transición.
