Ruben es una variante de Reuben, que proviene del hebreo antiguo Rə'ūḇēn, interpretado tradicionalmente como 'He aquí, un hijo' (de ra'ah, 'ver', y ben, 'hijo'), aunque otra lectura sugiere 'Él ha visto mi miseria', según las palabras de Lía en el Génesis al nombrar a su primogénito.
