Norman vient du vieux francais et vieil anglais Northman, litteralement 'homme du Nord,' terme designant les descendants vikings installes en Normandie au Xe siecle. Introduit dans le monde anglophone par la conquete normande de l'Angleterre en 1066, le nom porta longtemps des connotations aristocratiques. Il connut son apogee au milieu du XXe siecle en Australie et en Grande-Bretagne — les registres australiens le classent regulierement parmi les 100 prenoms masculins les plus donnes de 1952 a 1962, avant que les modes d'apres-guerre ne l'eclipsent. Aujourd'hui il seduit a nouveau les parents amateurs de prenoms vintage.
