Nur (نور) est le mot arabe pour lumière, utilisé comme prénom dans tout le monde musulman sous sa forme simple. Tandis que Noura est la forme féminine arabe, Nur est le plus caractéristique de l'usage turc, malais, indonésien, ourdou et centrasiatique — l'orthographe par laquelle ce concept lumineux a voyagé le plus largement dans les cultures musulmanes non arabes. Dans le monde malais, « Nur- » est sans doute le préfixe nominal le plus courant (Nurul, Nurhayati, Nursyahirah). Dans la théologie soufie, Nur Muhammad — la lumière primordiale de la création — est un concept mystique central. Sa plus grande porteuse historique fut Nur Jahan, l'impératrice moghole qui gouverna effectivement l'Inde dans les années 1610–1620 ; son titre signifie « Lumière du Monde ».
