Pamela est un prénom féminin anglais inventé par le poète élisabéthain Sir Philip Sidney dans son roman pastoral Arcadia (v. 1580). Dérivé du grec pan (tout) et meli (miel), il signifie 'toute douceur'. Le prénom est resté une curiosité littéraire jusqu'au roman épistolaire de Samuel Richardson Pamela, ou la vertu récompensée (1740), qui l'a popularisé en Angleterre et en Amérique. Aux États-Unis, il a atteint le rang 10 en 1953 et était très répandu en Australie au début des années 1950. Au Brésil, la variante portugaise Pâmela est devenue tendance à la fin du XXe siècle.
