Rogero est une forme archaïque de Roger, remontant au vieux haut-allemand 'Hrodgar', signifiant 'lancier célèbre' (hrod : renommée + gar : lance). Il est entré en portugais et en espagnol par l'influence normande et wisigothique, survivant comme variante littéraire tandis que Rogério s'imposait dans l'usage courant. Dans la littérature italienne, le nom est immortalisé sous la forme Ruggiero — le noble chevalier sarrasin de l'Arioste dans 'Roland furieux'. Aujourd'hui, Rogero est rare ; son équivalent moderne Rogério reste populaire au Brésil.
