Süleyman est la forme turque de Salomon, issu de l'arabe Sulaymān et de l'hébreu Shlomo, dont la racine shalom signifie 'paix'. Le nom est chargé d'une signification abrahamique millénaire : le roi Salomon est vénéré dans les traditions juive, chrétienne et islamique comme symbole de sagesse divine et de gouvernance juste. Dans l'islam, le prophète Sulaymān est considéré comme investi par Dieu d'un pouvoir sur les hommes, les djinns, les animaux et les vents. La figure qui a le plus immortalisé ce nom est Soliman Ier — 'le Magnifique' en Europe, Kanuni ('le Législateur') dans le monde ottoman — qui régna de 1520 à 1566 et conduisit l'Empire ottoman à son âge d'or.
