Serafim est l'adaptation portugaise et slave méridionale de l'ancien nom hébreu Seraphim (שְׂרָפִים), dérivé de la racine 'saraph' signifiant 'brûler', faisant de ses porteurs les 'ardents'. Dans les Écritures hébraïques, les séraphins apparaissent dans Isaïe 6:2–6 comme des êtres célestes à six ailes entourant le trône de Dieu.
