Stas est le diminutif affectueux polonais de Stanislaw, l'un des prenoms slaves les plus anciens et les plus illustres, compose de stani ("devenir, se tenir ferme") et slaw ("gloire, renommee"). Le nom est intimement lie a l'histoire de la Pologne : il fut porte par le martyr Stanislaw de Szczepanow, saint patron de la Pologne, et par le dernier roi de Pologne, Stanislaw August Poniatowski.
