Valentin est la forme masculine de l'ancien nom romain Valentinus, issu du latin valens — fort, vigoureux, en bonne santé. Il fut porté par plusieurs martyrs chrétiens primitifs, dont le plus célèbre est saint Valentin de Rome, dont l'association à l'amour courtois a fait du nom un symbole du romantisme dans le monde occidental.
