Alp is one of the oldest Turkic given names, carrying the meaning of "hero" or "brave warrior." In the ancient Turkic warrior tradition, the word alp was not merely a name but an honorific title bestowed upon exceptional fighters and commanders across the Eurasian steppes. It appears prominently in early Turkic epic literature, including the Oghuzname cycle. The name gained lasting historical fame through Alp Arslan, the Seljuk sultan whose victory at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 reshaped Anatolia. Today it is still used in Turkey and Turkic-speaking Central Asian countries, often as a prefix in compound names such as Alparslan or Alptekin.
