Aurel is a masculine name derived from the Latin "Aurelius," which itself comes from "aureus" meaning "golden" or "gilded." The name traces its roots to the ancient Roman gens Aurelia, one of the most distinguished patrician families of the Republic and Empire. Its most celebrated bearer was the Stoic philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius, whose reign (161–180 CE) is remembered as the last era of the Pax Romana.
