Dipankar is a Sanskrit name composed of dipa (lamp, light) and kara (maker, one who does), meaning one who lights lamps or the lamp lighter. It is a traditional name popular in Bengal (both West Bengal and Bangladesh) as well as other parts of India. In Buddhist tradition, Dipankara is the name of a legendary Buddha who preceded Gautama Buddha by many eons, and to whom Gautama — in a past life — made his vow to attain enlightenment.
