Hilda is a Germanic feminine name derived from hild meaning battle or war. It was borne by Saint Hilda of Whitby (614–680), one of the most influential women in early English Christianity, who presided over the famous Synod of Whitby in 664. The name was popular throughout the Middle Ages and saw a strong revival in the 19th century. In Norse mythology, the Valkyries — warrior maidens who chose the slain — carried the hild element in many of their names. Hilda experienced a cultural resurgence through the Netflix animated series Hilda, introducing the name to a new generation.
