Karine is a French and Scandinavian form of Katherine, tracing its roots to the Greek katharos, meaning pure. While Karin dominated the Nordic countries and Karina spread across Southern and Eastern Europe, Karine became distinctly associated with France, where it experienced a remarkable surge of popularity in the early 1970s. It ranked as high as 6th in France in 1972, with over 11,600 babies given the name that year.
