Lanzo is an ancient Germanic masculine name rooted in the Proto-Germanic element *land* (territory, land) or *lanz* (lance, spear), and represents one of the earliest medieval forms from which the modern name Lance — and indirectly, Lancelot — descend. The name flourished among the Lombards and Franks during the early medieval period, when compact Germanic names with martial and territorial associations were prized by the warrior aristocracy. Its legacy survives embedded in the Italian landscape: Lanzo d'Intelvi, a mountain comune overlooking Lake Como in Lombardy, and Lanzo Torinese, a Piedmontese town at the foot of the Alps, both trace their names to Lombard lords who held those territories in the early Middle Ages. As the medieval period gave way to the Renaissance, Lanzo gradually ceded ground to its smoother Romance descendants — Lance in English and French, Lanzarote in Spanish — becoming increasingly rare as a given name while remaining vibrant as a toponym.
