📖 About Lisandre

Lisandre is a refined variant of Lisandro, itself the Ibero-Romance adaptation of the ancient Greek Lysandros (Λύσανδρος). The name is composed of two Greek elements: lysis (λύσις), meaning "release" or "liberation", and anēr (ἀνήρ), meaning "man" — together yielding the heroic epithet "liberator of men". The most celebrated ancient bearer was Lysander of Sparta, the admiral who orchestrated Athens's defeat at the close of the Peloponnesian War in 404 BC. The -e ending gives the name a French or Provençal flavour, making it feel both classically grounded and subtly cosmopolitan. Across Latin America — particularly in Argentina, Venezuela, and Colombia — the Lisandro form flourished in educated naming traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries, and Lisandre carries that same intellectual gravitas with broader European appeal.
