📖 About Mathis

Mathis is a sleek, streamlined French and German variant of Matthias — itself the New Testament Greek form of the Hebrew Mattityahu, meaning "gift of God." Where Matthias is the name of the apostle chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:26), the shortened Mathis emerged in medieval France and the German-speaking regions as an everyday vernacular form, carrying the same sacred heritage in a more approachable shape. Historically, the name is most strikingly borne by the German Renaissance painter Mathis Gothart Nithart (c. 1470–1528), better known as Matthias Grünewald, whose Isenheim Altarpiece remains one of the most emotionally devastating works in Western art. In modern France, Mathis experienced a remarkable renaissance of its own: it climbed steadily from rank 8 in 2003 to a peak of rank 3 in both 2005 and 2006, riding a wave of affection for crisp, modern-sounding takes on traditional names. With about 5,000–6,000 boys given the name per year at its peak, Mathis became a defining name of the early-2000s French generation. Compact and confident, it travels easily across borders, feeling at home in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and German-speaking countries alike.
