It originated as a pet form of Eleanor (or Helen/Ellen), names themselves derived from the Old Provençal Aliénor and ultimately from the Greek Helénē — meaning torch or bright, shining one. The name Nell carries centuries of warmth and intimacy; it was the kind of name a mother whispered, not proclaimed in court. In 17th-century England, Nell became culturally iconic through Nell Gwyn, the spirited orange-seller turned actress who captivated King Charles II, cementing the name's association with charm and vivacity.
