📖 About Raimunda

Raimunda is the feminine form of Raimundo, derived from the Germanic elements 'ragin' (counsel, advice) and 'mund' (protector), meaning 'wise protector.' The name entered the Iberian Peninsula through Visigothic influence and became deeply rooted in Portuguese and Spanish culture during the medieval period. In Brazil, Raimunda was enormously popular throughout the early-to-mid 20th century, ranking as high as 6th in the 1930s and maintaining a top-15 position through the 1960s, with nearly 160,000 registered bearers across those decades. The name was especially prevalent in the northeastern states of Ceará, Maranhão, and Pará, where it carried a strong association with devout, hardworking women of rural communities. Its decline after the 1960s mirrors Brazil's broader shift toward international and modern-sounding names, though Raimunda remains a culturally resonant name that evokes a generation of Brazilian matriarchs.
