Stephanus is the Latin and Greek form of Stephen, derived from the Greek Stephanos meaning crown or wreath. It is the name of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr (protomartyr), whose stoning is described in the Acts of the Apostles. The Latinised form Stephanus was widely used in medieval Europe, particularly in ecclesiastical and scholarly contexts. It remains in use today primarily in the Netherlands, South Africa, and among communities with Dutch Reformed heritage, where the classical Latin form has been maintained as a given name.
