The spelling Yonathan preserves the full Hebrew pronunciation with three syllables, distinguishing it from the shortened Yonatan and the Anglicised Jonathan. In the Hebrew Bible, Yonathan (Jonathan) is one of the most compelling figures — the eldest son of King Saul and beloved friend of David, whose friendship is described as one of the deepest bonds in all of scripture.
