Mehmet é a forma especificamente turca do nome árabe Muhammad, que significa 'louvado' ou 'digno de louvor' (da raiz *ḥ-m-d*, louvar). Enquanto Muhammad se espalhou pelo mundo islâmico como nome do Profeta, Mehmet evoluiu como sua variante anatólia e otomana — moldada por séculos de fonologia turca e identidade cultural.
