Iason ist die ursprüngliche altgriechische Form von Jason, abgeleitet vom Verb „iasthai" (heilen). Er ist in der griechischen Mythologie als Anführer der Argonauten verewigt – der legendären Helden, die zur Rückholung des Goldenen Vlieses aussegelten –, ein Mythos, den Pindar besingt und Euripides in seiner Tragödie „Medea" dramatisiert.
