Fabius es un nombre de la antigua Roma, perteneciente a la ilustre gens Fabia, una de las familias patricias más antiguas de la historia romana. Derivado del latín faba ("haba"), refleja las tradiciones de nomenclatura agrícola de la Roma primitiva. Los Fabios produjeron estadistas y generales célebres, especialmente Quinto Fabio Máximo, cuya estrategia de desgaste frente a Aníbal le valió el epíteto de "Cunctator" (el Contemporizador) y dio origen al concepto de "estrategia fabiana", aún vigente en el pensamiento militar y político. El nombre desapareció en la Edad Media, pero hoy evoca la grandeza de la Roma clásica.
