Frédéric es la forma francesa de Federico, que toma los elementos del alto alemán antiguo "frid" (paz) y "ric" (gobernante), una combinación que dio origen a uno de los nombres más duraderos de la aristocracia europea. En Francia, el nombre llegó con la nobleza franca y fue adoptando gradualmente su acento y ortografía galos. Vivió un notable auge de popularidad en la segunda mitad del siglo XX: los registros franceses lo muestran entrando al top diez hacia 1966 y alcanzando el puesto 2 en 1975, con más de 15.000 niños bautizados ese año. Su popularidad decayó suavemente en los años 80. Frédéric posee una elegancia ligeramente formal y es famoso sobre todo gracias al compositor Frédéric Chopin.
