Leonid es la forma eslava del griego antiguo Leonidas, que significa "hijo del león" (del griego leon, λέων). El nombre original fue inmortalizado por el rey espartano que lideró a 300 guerreros en la Batalla de las Termópilas en el 480 a.C.
