Leonid est la forme slave de l'ancien grec Leonidas, signifiant « fils du lion » (du grec leon, λέων). Le nom original fut immortalisé par le roi spartiate qui mena 300 guerriers à la bataille des Thermopyles en 480 av. J.-C. Transmis au russe et à l'ukrainien par le grec byzantin, Leonid est devenu particulièrement prominent à l'ère soviétique, porté par des dirigeants, des scientifiques et des artistes de renom.
