Nikolas es una variante del nombre griego Nikolaos, formado por nike (victoria) y laos (pueblo), con el significado de 'victoria del pueblo'. Su difusion por Europa se debio en gran parte a la devocion popular a san Nicolas de Mira, obispo del siglo IV cuya generosidad legendaria lo convirtio en uno de los santos mas venerados del mundo cristiano y en la inspiracion del moderno Papa Noel. La variante con 'k' mantiene la grafia griega original y ha ganado popularidad en el siglo XXI en Espana, America Latina y el mundo de habla alemana, donde los padres buscan una forma clasica pero visualmente diferenciada.
