Nikolas est une variante du nom grec Nikolaos, forme de nike (victoire) et laos (peuple), signifiant 'victoire du peuple'. Sa diffusion en Europe doit beaucoup a la veneration de saint Nicolas de Myre, eveque du IVe siecle dont la generosite legendaire envers les enfants et les pauvres en fit l'un des saints les plus populaires de la chretiente et l'ancetre du Pere Noel moderne. La graphie avec 'k' conserve le kappa grec originel et connait un regain d'interet au XXIe siecle dans les pays germanophones et mediterraneens comme forme classique mais visuellement distincte.
