Noura es la forma femenina árabe de Nour/Nur (نور), que significa luz y resplandor. Enraizada en el sagrado concepto de iluminación divina central para la teología islámica, se conecta con Ayat al-Nur (Corán 24:35) — "Dios es la Luz de los cielos y la tierra" — uno de los versículos más meditados del Corán. El Nur se convirtió en un tema central del misticismo sufí a través de poetas como Rumi. La terminación femenina -a da a Noura su identidad distintiva, más prevalente en el Levante, el Norte de África y la Península Arábiga. La Reina Noor de Jordania dio al nombre visibilidad mundial en 1978.
