Terence es un nombre de profundas raíces romanas, derivado del apellido latino Terentius, perteneciente a uno de los clanes más ilustres de Roma. Su portador más célebre en la antigüedad fue Publio Terencio Afro (c. 185–159 a. C.), un esclavo liberto del norte de África que se convirtió en uno de los grandes dramaturgos latinos, autor de seis comedias estudiadas durante más de dos milenios. El nombre puede derivar del latín 'terere' (frotar, trillar), aunque algunos lingüistas lo vinculan a raíces etruscas.
