Terence est un prénom aux profondes racines romaines, dérivé du nom de famille latin Terentius, appartenant à l'un des clans les plus distingués de Rome. Son porteur le plus célèbre dans l'Antiquité fut Publius Terentius Afer (v. 185–159 av. J.-C.), un esclave affranchi d'Afrique du Nord devenu l'un des plus grands dramaturges latins, dont les six comédies sont étudiées depuis plus de deux millénaires.
