Alma puise ses racines dans le latin alma ("nourrissante", "qui donne vie") et signifie simplement "âme" en espagnol. Très porté au XIXe siècle — notamment après la bataille de l'Alma en 1854 — il était tombé dans l'oubli avant de connaître un retour spectaculaire : il se classait 9e en Espagne depuis 2021 et atteignait la 6e place en France en 2024.
