Axel est la forme scandinave et germanique du nom biblique hébreu Absalom (Avshalom), signifiant 'père de la paix.' Le nom est entré en Scandinavie par la tradition chrétienne médiévale, popularisé notamment par l'influent archevêque Absalon de Lund (v. 1128–1201), considéré comme le fondateur de Copenhague. Pendant des siècles, il est resté un classique nordique associé à la force et à l'autorité intellectuelle.
