Axel é a forma escandinava e germânica do nome bíblico hebraico Absalão (Avshalom), com o significado de 'pai da paz.' O nome chegou à Escandinávia através da tradição cristã medieval, popularizado em parte pelo influente Arcebispo Absalão de Lund (c. 1128–1201), considerado o fundador de Copenhague.
