Owain est un ancien prénom gallois à l'étymologie disputée, le plus souvent rattaché au latin Eugenius (« bien né, noble ») via le vieux gallois Ou(u)ein. Ce prénom est profondément ancré dans la mythologie et l'histoire galloises : Owain mab Urien était un légendaire prince de Rheged du VIe siècle, célébré dans les poèmes de Taliesin. Owain Glyndŵr (v. 1359–v. 1415) mena la dernière grande révolte galloise contre la domination anglaise, devenant un symbole durable de l'indépendance du pays de Galles.
