Rees est une forme anglicisée du nom gallois Rhys, l’un des noms les plus chargés d’histoire au pays de Galles. Le Rhys original dérive du vieux gallois « ris », signifiant « enthousiasme », « ardeur » ou « passion » — une étymologie appropriée pour un nom porté par plusieurs princes gallois fougueux. Le plus éminent fut Rhys ap Gruffydd (Lord Rhys), qui régna sur le royaume de Deheubarth au XIIe siècle et fut le premier à recevoir de la couronne anglaise le titre de « Prince du Sud du pays de Galles ».
