📖 About Rees

Rees is an anglicised form of the Welsh name Rhys, one of the most storied names in Welsh history. The original Rhys derives from the Old Welsh “ris,” meaning “enthusiasm,” “ardour,” or “passion” — a fitting etymology for a name borne by several fiery Welsh princes. The most prominent was Rhys ap Gruffydd (The Lord Rhys), who ruled the kingdom of Deheubarth in the 12th century and was the first to be styled “Prince of South Wales” by the English crown. The anglicised spelling Rees became common as Welsh families integrated into English-speaking bureaucratic systems, particularly from the 17th century onward.
