Theresa est la forme anglaise et allemande du prénom Teresa, issu du grec ancien Θηρεσία (Theresia). Son étymologie le rattache à l'île égéenne de Théra ou au grec *therízein* (moissonner), d'où son sens traditionnel de 'moissonneuse'. Le prénom s'est répandu en Europe grâce à sainte Thérèse d'Ávila, grande mystique du XVIe siècle, et a été mis en valeur par l'impératrice Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche, l'une des souveraines les plus marquantes du XVIIIe siècle.
