Xavi is a Catalan diminutive of Xavier, ultimately derived from the Basque place name Etxeberria, meaning "the new house" (etxe "house" + berri "new"). The name entered global usage through Saint Francis Xavier (1506–1552), the Navarrese Jesuit missionary who was one of the founders of the Society of Jesus and became the patron saint of missions after his extraordinary evangelising journeys to India, Southeast Asia, and Japan.
