Maud é uma contração medieval normanda de Matilda, derivada do antigo alto-alemão Mahthildis — união de maht ("força") e hild ("batalha"). Chegou à Inglaterra com os normandos e rapidamente se tornou um nome aristocrático e real. Sua portadora mais notável, a Imperatriz Maud (1102–1167), lutou na guerra civil chamada A Anarquia pelo trono inglês, dando origem à dinastia Plantageneta. O poema Maud de Alfred Lord Tennyson (1855) trouxe-lhe nova vida literária.
