Maud es una contracción medieval normanda de Matilda, que proviene del antiguo alto alemán Mahthildis — combinación de maht ("fuerza") e hild ("batalla"). Llegó a Inglaterra con los normandos y se convirtió rápidamente en un nombre de la realeza. Su portadora más célebre, la emperatriz Maud (1102–1167), luchó en la guerra civil conocida como La Anarquía para reclamar el trono inglés. El poema Maud de Alfred Lord Tennyson (1855) le otorgó una nueva dimensión literaria.
