Silvia leitet sich vom lateinischen Wort silva ab, das 'Wald' oder 'Gehoelz' bedeutet und Bilder unberuehrter Natur und pastoraler Schoenheit heraufbeschwort. In der roemischen Mythologie war Rhea Silvia die Vestalin und legendaere Mutter von Romulus und Remus, den Grundern Roms. Die heilige Silvia von Rom, Mutter von Papst Gregor dem Grossen, verankerte den Namen in der christlichen Tradition. Shakespeare verewigt ihn in Zwei Herren aus Verona.
