Tarquinius ist die vollständige lateinische Form von Tarquin, ein Name etruskischer Herkunft, der mit der antiken Stadt Tarquinia in Mittelitalien verbunden ist. Er ist vor allem als Dynastiename zweier legendärer Könige Roms bekannt — Tarquinius Priscus und Tarquinius Superbus — deren Herrschaft die römische Monarchie 509 v. Chr. beendete. Der Name wurde zum Inbegriff der Tyrannei in der westlichen Tradition und von Shakespeare in Die Schändung der Lucretia verewigt.
